YouTube is increasing the threshold for new creators to monetize their content.
Starting February 1, 2027, aspiring YouTube creators will face stricter requirements to join the YouTube Partner Program. The platform announced that new applicants will need to accumulate 8,000 watch hours, doubling the current requirement, to start earning from advertisements.
Additionally, creators focusing on YouTube Shorts will need to achieve approximately 20 million qualified views over the previous 90 days. This change reflects YouTube’s strategy to ensure that only the most dedicated and successful creators benefit from ad revenue.
The decision has sparked discussions among content creators, with many expressing concerns about the increased difficulty in reaching these new milestones. Some argue that the heightened requirements may discourage new talent from pursuing content creation on the platform.
On the other hand, YouTube maintains that these changes are necessary to improve the quality of content and ensure that advertisers are associated with high-performing channels. The platform believes that this will ultimately lead to a better experience for both creators and viewers.
Existing members of the YouTube Partner Program will not be affected by these changes, allowing them to continue earning under the current guidelines. However, the new rules will apply to any creators who join the program after the specified date.
The shift in YouTube’s policy underscores the platform’s ongoing efforts to refine its monetization strategies in response to evolving market dynamics. As competition among content creators intensifies, the new requirements may serve as a filter to highlight the most engaging and popular channels.
